There’s a great story about growing organic apples in the New York Times this morning. Apparently many “experts” believe it’s impossible to grow them without pesticides but this farmer figured it out. We can’t grow apples in Florida, but neem works wonders on citrus and other fruit trees.

Do any of our readers have success stories they’d like to share?

Hey everyone! Cool blog! Do you know more resources on this topic?

    Hi Claud,
Are you looking for resources on neem in general or neem on apples? I can help with the general question but it doesn’t get cold enough here to grow apples so i won’t be much help with that!

Neem oil IS A PESTICIDE. It is not exempt from registration by the EPA. While it is a very effective “natural” product, it is a pesticide.

Actually, that’s not 100% true. Neem does not kill pests in the traditional sense, it stops them from feeding, moulting or reproducing. It doesn’t harm honeybees or earthworms unless you drown them in spray. It’s so non-toxic that we sell far more neem to be used as a medicinal herb for people and pets than we sell for use as a pesticide.

I developed a horrible chemical sensitivity in the early 1990s that made it impossible for me to risk exposure to anything toxic. Neem offered an alternative that would let me continue to garden and live with a house full of dogs.
