After a disappointing crop of neem seeds last summer followed
by a record-cold winter, we are absolutely delighted to see tiny neem sprouts popping
their beautiful green heads out of the ground! We had a miscommunication with the greenhouse staff, so all
the seeds were planted but we’ve ordered two more batches and are testing the
first one now. We don’t want to hold off
shipping sprouts to people who have been waiting for months, though. (If you
want both seeds and sprouts, we’ll have to hold your order – hopefully just a
couple of days while we confirm germination rates but we won’t ship until we’re
happy with what’s coming out of the ground.) Almost everything else in the greenhouse looks spectacular
too. The ashwagandha had a rough winter but it’s come back beautifully. The holy
basil and chaya are thriving in the heat, and we found the perfect spots for
betel leaf and Bacopa (brahmi) to soak up dappled sun. (The gotu kola, however,
got a little sunburned and then got some kind of strange bug – it’s coming back
but it’s not ready to ship.) We got
great reports on the new neem and citronella soap so we’ll continue that
special for another month – buy a Botanical Outdoor Gel and we’ll send you a
full-sized bar of soap. Or if you’d rather, we’ll send you a second bottle of
the gel – just include a note in the comment section. If you’re
planning a trip this summer, be sure to check out Sherrie’s beautiful travel
pillows. I sleep with mine every night and wouldn’t consider actually going
anywhere without it! And don’t
forget your pets! Although no neem products have been EPA-approved to treat
fleas and ticks, Neem for Dogs is unconditionally guaranteed – and it’s 100%
natural and non-toxic. Our dogs particularly love the Dry Dog Shampoo this time
of year, Shar-Peis get a little stinky in the heat but they hate water with a
passion. The powder is a great compromise – they smell like they’ve been bathed
but we all miss out on the misery of getting wet (You don’t think they’d get
wet without us getting wet too, do you?) To our Central Florida friends with neem trees that still haven't rebounded -- give them another month or so please! I talked to the nicest man last week, he had two 30-foot trees in South Tampa that were just sticks -- except for this funny-looking green growth near the roots! The big trees on NTF website looked like that once, they didn't show any signs of life after the '87 freezes until my birthday on the first of July, but they probably grew eight feet that summer and then 20 feet the next when we didn't have temperatures below freezing.
