Description
We’ve been selling neem seeds from Senegal for several years with outstanding results. These are incredibly tough trees—they’ve been growing in the Sahara Desert with almost no attention for decades. ( They’ve reseeded themselves from seeds originally planted before World War II as part of the Indian diaspora during the British Empire.)
A group of Senegalese people, including some of their key political leaders, is working to establish a neem industry in Senegal and across Africa. It’s the ultimate in sustainable economic development. A neem industry based on trees growing in the Sahara could provide stable incomes for people across an impoverished continent while soaking up the gases that fuel climate change. A thriving neem industry in Africa is also a significant benefit for all of us — demand for neem products is growing at a rapid rate, but supplies from India have been stable. Tapping into trees that are already at their peak production can help meet the growing demand for safe and effective biopesticides.
We’ve raised the price on seeds this year to help provide the seed money needed to develop the infrastructure to harvest neem and produce a high-quality neem oil that can be sold in the US and around the world. Dr. Doudou Faye, a native of Senegal with a PhD in entomology from Texas Tech University, is the founder of the Senegal Neem Foundation and our long-time friend. He’s personally directing the harvest and shipment of these seeds so we’re confident that they’ll be viable. (Previous shipments of seeds have sprouted in record time.)
With international shipping, we’re never sure exactly when the seeds will arrive in Florida, but we’re selling them in advance so that once they’re in our hands, we can get them to you as quickly as possible. The phytosanitary statement was obtained and filed the week of May 12, so we’re hopeful that they will be here by the end of this week.
Please read Growing Neem from Seeds when you place your order. It includes very specific directions on potting soil, watering and fertilization that will be important to know before your seeds arrive so you can plant them immediately.
(We’ve having some problems with the website, so if you’re interested in reviews, please check this page where I couldn’t update pricing. Personally, I always check reviews before I order seeds!)
