Description
Like neem, henna has been used for centuries on the Indian subcontinent. Today, it’s most often used to dye hair and skin. It’s particularly beneficial when used to cover gray hair because it helps to strengthen hair instead of the chemical dyes that damage hair and have been linked to cancer.
In the tropics, henna trees can grow to 30 feet tall but they’re also easy to grow indoors, especially if they spend summers outside and winters in a sunny window or under grow lights.
It’s easy to use henna as either a hair or skin dye. Unbroken fresh leaves will not stain, so they must be dried and then crushed to release the dye. Natural henna will be reddish, so it is best applied to roots after an initial application to a full head of hair.
