Katuk, (Breynia androgyna) is also known as star gooseberry or sweet leaf. It’s probably my favorite summer edible — the leaves taste like peanuts right off the plant so I nibble on it every time I walk by. It’s also incredibly nutritious, according to the World Vegetables Book. It’s 49% protein and 100 grams contain up to 22% of the daily requirement for Vitamin A. It is also one of the few vegetables containing Vitamin K.
It also has:
2.77% potassium compared to bananas at 1.48%
2.77% calcium compared to dried skim milk at 1.3%
0.61% phosphorus compared to dried soybeans at 0.55%
Plus it contains magnesium, Vitamins A, B & C, K and iron.
From a nutritional perspective, it’s like chaya, except you can eat this uncooked.
