Description
Of all the jasmines we’ve ever grown, the night-blooming jasmine — also known as Queen of the Night — is absolutely the best-smelling, although its flowers are nearly inconspicuous. In India, it’s known as Raat ki rani, raatrani, or Hasnuhana, and its flowers are widely used as a perfume, in some medical applications and in religious ceremonies.
It’s also an incredibly easy plant to grow. Our “mamas” are blooming in dappled shade as well as full sun, and they survive months-long droughts and then standing water if we get a lot of rain. We almost forget they exist until this amazing scent dominates the whole greenhouse and causes us to go in search of the smell. And unlike many of the tropical plants we sell, the night-blooming jasmine is hardy to 25 degrees, although it may freeze back to the ground.
You can cut the flowers and bring them inside at night, or grow it in a pot near a window where you can enjoy its amazing scent.
